One of Michigan's most beautiful trails, the 8.25-mile Huron Sunrise Trail travels along the Lake Huron shoreline from South Shore Park in Rogers City to the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. We recommend staying the night in Rogers City so you can wake up early to witness a stunning sunrise from this aptly named trail. You'll find several lodging and dining options in Rogers City and camping at P.H. Hoeft State Park.
One of the lodging options is right on the trail overlooking the beach at North Shore Park. The Huron Sunrise Trail is paved with asphalt and connects several parks along its route, offering many good places to park and get on the trail. We recommend starting at South Shore Park or Lakeside Park and venturing north to the lighthouse. If you would like to extend your journey, you can travel 1.5 miles south on Harbor View Road to the Harbor View observation platform where you can see freighters being loaded at the world's largest open pit limestone mine.
As you travel north on the trail from South Shore Park, you will need to ride on Lake Street to the north end of Lakeside Park where the dedicated trail resumes. Make sure to look for the blue trail signs. At Lakeside Park, a short spur of the trail takes you out onto a breakwall and fishing platform that wraps around the Rogers City Marina. North of Lakeside Park, the paved trail continues along the water's edge and then a forested area through Trout River Park and Seagull Point Park. North of Seagull Point Park, you must travel on Shore Road to connect with the trail as it follows a long stretch of beach to P.H. Hoeft State Park.
The crystal blue water of Lake Huron is quite a sight. A spur of the trail at the park entrance takes you to a picnic area and beach. North of P.H. Hoeft State Park, the trail runs parallel to M-23 through a mostly forested area to the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, a great place to relax and enjoy the beach and scenery. You can also take a tour of the lighthouse and check out historical exhibits at this nicely restored landmark. The lighthouse is also a good place to park and begin your journey from the north.
