Grand Traverse Area Trails Network

The trails in the Grand Traverse region are among the most picturesque in the state and one of the best ways to experience the stunning beauty of this popular tourist area.

This regional network of trails was developed and continues to grow under the care of Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails Inc., which was formed in 1998 when four trail groups united to create one trail authority for Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. The organization oversees the TART Trails network, the Leelanau Trail, the VASA Pathway and is the fundraising entity for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. Through the work of this group, and their many volunteers and sponsors, the Grand Traverse Area Trails Network continue to grow every year.

In the summer of 2014, the Leelanau Trail was extended another two miles on the northern end through the village of Suttons Bay to Dumas Road. From there, trail planners hope to extend the trail even further some day, north to Northport and west to the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. In 2015, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail was extended another 3.7 miles from the Crystal River on Fisher Road to Port Oneida Road, with another 3 miles of trail to be added this summer from Port Oneida Road to Bohemian Road.

Constuction on the Boardman Lake Trail from 10th Street to 14th Street was completed last fall, with plans to extend the trail along the western shore from 14th Street to South Airport Road in the next few years.

The first seven miles of the Boardman River Trail, TART's newest trail, was completed in 2013, connecting Mayfield Pond Park to the North Country Trail at the Muncie Lakes Trailhead. When completed, the Boardman River Trail will connect with the southern end of the Boardman Lake Trail and make a 42-mile loop along the Boardman River to Mayfield and circle back to the TART trail through the VASA Pathway. Most of the proposed trail is in forested area on existing dirt paths and two-tracks.
